Ulysses Everett McGill

Mcgill is imprisoned for practicing law without a license. He convinces his friends Delmar and Pete to escape from prison so that he can find his buried loot, but there really isn’t any loot to be found.  In reality it is so he can get back to his family before his wife remarries.

Delmar O'Donnell

O'Donnell is a small-time crook, who was sentenced to prison for robbing a Piggly Wiggly in Yazoo City, Mississippi.  Delmar tells Everett and Pete he was innocent of the crime; he later admits he is guilty. Delmar says once he gets his share of the loot, he is going to use the money to buy back his family’s farm.  Delmar claims “you ain't no kind of man if you ain't got land."

Pete Hogwallop

Hogwallop really doesn’t tell us much about his past.  Pete believes in being true to his kin, even when his cousin Washington B. Hogwallop turns him over to the law. Pete wishes to move west and open his own restaurant, and get married. He agreed to break out of prison with Everett and Delmar, even though he only had two weeks left on his sentence.

Daniel Teague (Big Dan)

Teague is a pretend Bible salesman who robs Everett.  Big Dan later reveals the identity of Everett, Delmar, and Pete when they are disguised at a Ku Klux Klan rally.

Penny

is Everett McGill's ex-wife. She is tired of Everett's wheeling and dealing and divorces him while he is in prison.  She tells her children he was hit by a train.

Sirens

The sirens are three women out in the middle of a river doing laundry and singing. They catch the attention of Pete and eventually lull Everett and Delmar as well into stupors. After getting the three men intoxicated they cash Pete in for the bounty money.
